Planning is well underway for the 2016-2017 Religious Education Program (REP). I am working hard planning numerous family activities, special events and fun nights for youth of all ages, because building a strong faith community is an important part of our program. There are some new things in the works as well.
The Religious Education Registration form is included for grades K-8. The cost of Religious Ed will remain the same as in years past–$30.00 for first child, $25 second child, $20 third child with a family max of $75.00. Please do not let the cost of Religious Ed keep your from joining our program. See me for confidential help.
Along with the registration form is a copy of the “RESPECT Code of Conduct” which was approved by the Parish Council in February 2012. Please take a few minutes to read and help your child/children understand this policy. We want all children to feel safe while they are here.
This year our program will have a new and I hope exciting feel. Our Kick off will be Wednesday, September 21 from 6:45-8:00pm here in the Parish Center. This will be a fun evening for all. You and your children will get a better understanding of the year and get to meet their catechists and small group leaders. This year’s theme is “Called to Be Disciples.” We will meet those twelve special friends of Jesus and find out that they were not much different than us.
New this year, Middle School Life Nights, these are specially developed for our middle school students. This will be a Tri-parish event, with St. Charles and St. Mary. These nights will follow the High School LifeTeen schedule. They will begin on Sunday, October 2 and continue every 1st and 3rd Sunday evenings. Each evening will begin with 5:00pm Mass at St. Charles followed at 6:00pm and continues till 7:30pm with Life Night. Each night will include snacks, small group discussions, games and other activities. These nights are at no extra cost and although I cannot make them mandatory, I highly recommended them. It will be a great way to experience faith in an environment just for them. There will be an informational parent meeting on Wednesday, August 24 at 7:00pm in Andre Hall, St. Charles Church
Jesus tells us how important service to others is as part of our faith. In our Religious Ed program this year we will be looking at ways we can do just that. Again we will be serving others by making dinner for our Love Inc. guests on the 5th Wednesday of the month. The first one will be Wednesday, November 30 which will be handled by the 4 & 5th grade classes. Wednesday, March 29 is for K/1 & 3rd grades and May 31 will be Middle School students. The First Eucharist Class will serve dinner on Wednesday, April 5 as part of their Eucharist prep.
Again this year we will be participating in the “Souper Bowl of Caring” service project. This is a fund raising, food collecting good time. Along with this we will also be holding a free soup luncheon as we did last year. Mark your calendars now for Super Bowl weekend, February 4-5, 2017 for a “Souper Bowl of Caring.”
This year we will also be adding a service to our church element. We are in desperate need of mass servers and children’s choir member. I ask that children in 3-8th grades try being mass servers. Try it for 3 months and then if it is not for you, ask to be taken off the schedule. This is not an every weekend commitment, but it is a commitment. You must come to practices to learn what to do and be there on your scheduled times. Our scheduler works hard to give you off when requested.
Parents this is a great opportunity to show your support by joining our service to church mission. There are many opportunities to get involved with your parish family. Children’s Church leaders (usually once every other month), ushers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, choir members (don’t need to read music, just like to sing) are always needed as well as helping with one of the many fund raising events.
I am also looking for small group leaders, K/1 and 2nd grade catechists this year. Some of our catechists have been doing this since I began 12 years ago and would like a break. They will be happy to help you in any way they can and will always be available to answer any questions you may have or share their materials with you. If you are interested please let me know as soon as possible.
The greatest reward of serving others is how it makes you feel inside. That special feeling is God’s way of telling you “Thank you!” Thank you for caring and making a difference!
I am looking forward to another great year of learning with your children about our Catholic faith.
