2010-2011 Religious Education Program Information

a letter from Rita

Dear Parents and Students,

Planning is well underway for the 2010-2011 Religious Education Program (R.E.P.).  I am working hard planning numerous family activities, special events and fun nights for youth of all ages, because building a strong faith community is an important part of our program.   I am very excited about these and have highlighted some later in this letter.

The Religious Education Registration form is included for grades K-8.

The cost of Religious Education will remain the same as in the years past.

$30.00 for first child, $25—second child, $20 third, fourth child and up are free. There is a family maximum of $75.00.  This year I am happy to announce a special discount for the catechists who put in so much of their time to teach our children. As a thank you for their time and support the Administrative Services Committee has made it possible for catechist’s children to be free.  St. Joseph’s parish feels the continuing education of their children is very important and the support our catechists give to our program and to me should be rewarded.  Please do not let the cost of Religious Ed keep your from joining our program.  See me for confidential help.

We will be using a new program this year and are very excited.  The Pflaum Weekly program is lectionary based and with the supplemental curriculum they provide it meets all the Archdiocese’s requirements.  Look for flyers to be brought home with your children weekly and please take some time to do the Family section.

Our Religious Ed Kick off will be Wednesday, September 22nd from 6:45-8:00pm here in the Parish Center.  We will have family activities, large group activities, the children will meet their teachers and see their classrooms and the parents will be given lots of vital information.

Some fun things to look forward to this year are the Pancake Breakfast, Roller Skating at Traxside, making Soldier boxes, our Christmas Program, Bible Story Family Fun Night, Middle School Lock-in, Lent Family Night, the Middle School Auction and our REP Olympics, not to mention the fun each individual class will be having.

Serving others is a great way to spread the Good News and love of Jesus.  So as part of our program we will again be participating in a special service project with Love Inc.  On the 5th Wednesday of the month (there are about 4-5 a year) a group of us will be making and serving dinner for our “Love Inc family”.  The first one will be Wednesday, September 29th which will be handled by the Middle School, Wednesday, December 29 will be Grades 4 & 5, Wednesday, March 30 Grades 1 & 3 serve dinner and Wednesday, April 6 dinner will be served by our First Eucharist children.

This year I am hoping to plan a summer mission trip for our Middle School children.  It is a program through the Catholic group Young Neighbors in Action called “Just 5 Days” and will take place in Appleton, WI.  The program runs Monday-Friday with a cost of about $300 per person.  We will be doing fund raising to help with that cost.   It is a great opportunity for our children to experience faith sharing through serving others.  More information about both these service projects will be available on Kick off night.

Jesus calls each of us, men and women.  Stop and listen.  Is he calling you to share your faith with the children of St. Joseph’s as a catechist? Before you say “no” listen with your heart, pray and talk to other who have taught or are catechists now.   My hope is to have two catechists per room so no one is teaching alone.  If I do not get enough, you as parents will be asked to fill in each week or I will be forced to combine grades, which makes teaching more difficult. Training and lesson planning help is always available. If you are interested or have questions please contact me anytime at the office or at home.  My home number is 723-6727.

There are many other opportunities to volunteer during our Religious Education Program.  Please see the enclosed Volunteer sheet and return it with your registration form.

The greatest reward of serving others is how it makes you feel inside.  That special feeling is God’s way of telling you “Thank You!”  Thank you for caring and making a difference!

God Bless,

Rita VanSchyndel
